Install Tome

Get set up in four unhurried steps.

Tome turns the article you're reading into a beautifully typeset document on your Kindle. You'll need an invite code from the person running this server.

Install the extension

  1. Open the Tome listing on the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome, then Add extension.
  2. Pin Tome to your toolbar (puzzle-piece icon → 📌).

Arc, Edge and Brave install from this same listing — they all run Chrome extensions. Prefer not to use the store? There's a manual install at the bottom of this page.

Connect your account

  1. Click the Tome toolbar button, then the gear to open settings.
  2. Set the server URL to https://tome.pixelsyrup.com and press Save.
  3. Enter your invite code, your email, and your @kindle.com address, then press Redeem invite. Step 3 explains where to find that address.

Set up your Kindle email

Amazon gives every Kindle its own e-mail address, and only accepts documents from senders you've approved. Both halves are set on the same Amazon page — this is the step people miss, and its failure mode is silence.

Find your Kindle address. Go to Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences → Personal Document Settings. Under Send-to-Kindle E-Mail Settings each device is listed with an address ending in @kindle.com. Copy the one for the device you actually read on.

Approve the sender. On that same page, under Approved Personal Document E-Mail List, click Add a new approved e-mail address and add tome@updates.pixelsyrup.com.

Tell Tome where to send. Your Kindle address is stored on your account here, not on your device. You set it when you redeem your invite, and can change it any time in the extension's settings → Account → Kindle address. Do this whenever you switch Kindles, since the address is per-device.

Not using a Kindle? The delivery address doesn't have to be one. Put in any address you can receive at and the document arrives there as a normal attachment — which also means none of this step applies: no Amazon page, no approved-sender list. From there a rule in your mail client, or something like Zapier or IFTTT, can file it, push it to a reader, or drop it in cloud storage.

Use it

Open an article, scroll it once so images load, click the Tome button → Send to Kindle. That's it — it lands on your Kindle in a minute or two. Open preview gives you a print-ready view (⌘P → Save as PDF) if you'd rather keep the file.

Updating: nothing to do — Chrome keeps Tome up to date on its own, and your sign-in comes through untouched.

Don't skip the approval step

If the sender isn't on your approved list, Amazon accepts the message and throws it away. Tome reports the send as successful, and nothing ever arrives on the device.

Manual install

If you'd rather not install from the store, this server hands out the same extension as a zip you load yourself. Steps 2 to 4 above are unchanged — only the install differs.

  1. Unzip the download — you get a tome-extension folder. Move it somewhere permanent (not Downloads — the browser loads it from this location from now on).
  2. Open chrome://extensions (Arc: arc://extensions, Edge: edge://extensions).
  3. Turn on Developer mode (toggle in the top-right corner).
  4. Click Load unpacked and select the tome-extension folder.
  5. Pin Tome to your toolbar (puzzle-piece icon → 📌).

Updating: a manual install never updates itself. Download the zip again, replace the folder's contents, and press the reload icon on the Tome card in chrome://extensions. Your sign-in is kept, and Tome tells you when this server has a newer version than the copy you installed.

Pick one or the other. The store copy and this one are separate extensions as far as the browser is concerned, each with its own settings and sign-in — running both just gives you two Tome buttons. If you're switching to the store version, install it, sign in again, and remove the manual copy.
